Traditional Academic Courses

The Honors Program offers a variety of traditional and experiential academic courses that are taught by incredible faculty members from across Northeastern University.

Honors Discovery
(HONR 1102)

Honors Discovery is our introductory course taken by all Honors students during their first semester in the program. Students begin learning the skills to make an impact on their community and are introduced to Honors opportunities.

Course Details

Honors Discovery (HONR 1102) is a 1-credit course for students taking Honors Discovery in the Fall of their First Year. Students will need to register for this course through the Registrar as they enter Northeastern.

The Honors Discovery Studio taken by Internal Admit students during their first semester of study in Honors is a 0-credit course (tuition free). Internal Admits will not need to register for this course through the Registrar as they prepare to enter Honors.

Honors First-Year Inquiry Series
(HONR 1310)

The Honors First-Year Inquiry Series feature a variety of intriguing courses in which first-year Honors students explore issues and engage in experiential learning with a small group of their peers and a talented faculty member. 

Course Details

Honors First-Year Inquiries are 4-credit courses that are traditionally taken by first-year students in the Fall of their First Year.

Some First-Year Inquiry courses may satisfy one or more NUpath requirements. Enrollment in these classes are capped at 19 first-year Honors students unless stated otherwise.

Honors Interdisciplinary Seminars
(HONR 3310)

Honors Interdisciplinary Seminars are unique courses that enable upperclass Honors students to explore diverse contemporary issues or themes through an interdisciplinary lens.

Course Details

Honors Interdisciplinary Seminars are 4-credit course that are traditionally taken by students in their 2nd year or higher.

Honors Interdisciplinary Seminar may meet one or more NUpath requirements. Enrollment in these classes are capped at 19 upperclass Honors students.

For students in the Legacy Program, Honors Interdisciplinary Seminars can fulfill the Seminar course requirement.

Honors Departmental Courses
(HON Attribute)

Honors Departmental Course Sections enable students to delve more deeply into an area of study, while facilitating their completion of both a Major degree and Honors requirements.

Course Details

Honors Departmental Course Sections carry the same departmental prefix and course number as non-Honors courses, but are designated as Honors in the Registrar’s course history.

Honors Departmental Course Sections may meet one or more NUpath requirements. Pre-requisites for course enrollment are determined by the Academic Colleges.

Inside the Honors Studio Series

The Inside the Honors Studio Series are innovative, experiential short-courses that provide students with an opportunity to work closely with Honors faculty.

Course Details

The Inside the Honors Studio Series support students to creatively enhance their knowledge of a particular area of study or skill, give back to the community in a tangible way, and/or hone their professional skills.

The Inside the Honors Studio Series are non-credit bearing and tuition free. Course sections are traditionally held in the evening to accommodate all student schedules.
