Honors Global Funding to Get You Exploring the World.

First-Year / Direct Admits, being students who were admitted to the John Martinson Honors Program prior to enrolling at Northeastern, have access to funding to the Global Support Fund.

To apply for the Global Support Fund, students must complete and submit the GSF Request Form. The Honors Team encourages students to review the FAQs before beginning the form.

Overview

The Global Support Fund is a pool of $6,000 designed to be used by First-Year / Direct admits towards participating in approved global experiences offered by Northeastern:

DOCs
Honors@Monash
Semester-In / Summer-In
Self-Directed Global Experience

Global Co-Op
Alternative Spring Break
Traditional Study Abroad
Research / Service Abroad

GSF Request Form

To access the Global Support Fund, students must enroll in an approved Northeastern Global Experience and submit the GSF Request Form. This form must be submitted by the appropriate deadline displayed below.

After submitting the GSF Request Form, Honors will process your request and send it to SFS for final review and approval. Once approved, funds will be dispersed to your myNortheastern student account close to the start of the experience / academic term.

When Should I Apply for Funding?

You should apply to withdraw funds from the Global Support Fund once you are accepted to your global experience, but prior to the corresponding term request deadline. You cannot apply to withdraw funds from the GSF for an experience you are currently on or a previous experience.

DOC & Summer In Deadlines

Students interested in accessing the Global Support Fund for a DOC or Summer In experience should submit the GSF Request Form by the Summer 1 Deadline of April 10th.

How Long Does the Request Take to Process?

Once you submit your application, the Honors Program team will review your request and upon their approval, send it to Student Financial Services for final review and approval. SFS reviews applications closer to the start of the experience’s term (about 3 weeks before). Funding will not disperse until the semester of your experience, so the bill for that term is credited with the global support fund. You will receive an email award letter upon approval confirmation.

Please note that the GSF process team has final discretion regarding the amount of funding granted from the Global Support Fund.

IMPORTANT: the funding credit will first be applied towards any pending amount due/existing balance.

Student Financial Services will apply the approved amount of funding during the appropriate awarding period. Once the award has been approved, Honors will send a confirmation email to the student, sharing the amount they’ve been confirmed for and will provide more information on fund dispersal.

The Honors Team encourages students to read our frequently asked questions in order to understand the logistics of the Global Support Fund. If you have more questions, please feel free to contact the Honors Email or Student Financial Services.

What CAN I Use the Global Support Fund For?
  • Any Northeastern-approved global experience (see list above)

*May not be used towards expenses associated with a DOC for which the fee is already waived by Honors

  • Visa or Passport fees
  • Housing fees (if not included in program fee)
  • Meals (if not included in program fee)
    • To estimate the amount you might need for meals, please refer to the GEO webpage for your program for guidance. Most DOC web pages have estimated additional expenses for meals, etc.
    • If this information is not provided, please research your location of travel and request a reasonable amount for meals (i.e. not eating out for every meal and having expensive meals).
  • Required Course Materials (may only include books, software, or equipment that are referenced in a syllabus or program document).
What CAN’T I Use the Global Support Fund For?

  • A DOC for which the fee is already waived by Honors
  • Personal travel while abroad

Can I Use All of My Global Support Fund For One Experience?

Yes, you can use your Global Support Fund to support a single global experience; however, there is no guarantee that you will be awarded your full request.

The GSF application includes space to include supporting documentation regarding your program costs, flight/lodging estimates, and other expense details. Alongside this documentation, there is a text entry to explain your rationale for the amount you are requesting. The Honors Program will follow up with you if there are questions about certain request amounts.

How Do I Know My Global Support Fund Has Been Applied to My Bill?

If you are applying for funds for a future experience/academic term, your global support funds will not be officially added to your financial aid package until close to the start of that experience/academic term. Financial aid package information can be viewed via the My Financial Aid Status section of your myNortheastern portal under Services and Links.

Once funds are awarded, the money will officially disburse after the experience/semester has officially begun. To determine whether funding has disbursed, please review your myNortheastern student account information and select the option to review ‘Account Summary/ Detail by term.’ Please note that your e-bill is a static document and will not update in real time to reflect current disbursement information.

If there is an outstanding balance on a student’s account when the award is posted, the award may be applied to that balance first. Occasionally, students may reach their aid cap for the academic year, and in such cases their Honors Global Funding will be reduced to the maximum amount that can be awarded without disrupting other aid.

Should your global funding create a credit for you to withdraw as a refund from your student account, information on how to set-up direct deposit and request a refund can be found on the Student Financial Services website.

Why Did I Receive a Different Amount Than I Applied For?

If there is an outstanding balance on a student’s account when the award is posted, the award may be applied to that balance first. Occasionally, students may reach their aid cap for the academic year, and in such cases their Honors Global Funding will be reduced to the maximum amount that can be awarded without disrupting other aid.

Student Financial Services has final discretion on amounts awarded from the Global Support Fund. If you have questions regarding your funding or about the awarding process, please contact your Financial Aid Counselor.
